Memories out of Ashes: Part 5:
The Apartment later that night

Eight hours later, Adam paced the apartment floor waiting for Lisa to return. He hadn't seen her or heard from her since she walked out at Joe's and he was becoming restless. Late fall had settled into Seacouver and the apartment was unusually chilly. The fire that he had lit gave him little comfort as he sat on the couch wrapped in a blanket.

"Adam?"

Adam looked around for the voice that was calling him, and standing by the fireplace as if she had appeared out of thin air stood Alexa. "Alexa?" He walked over to her and wanted to hug her. "How is it possible? It can't be."

"Shh." She said as she put a finger to his lips. "It's time you move on with your life with Lisa."

"I miss you."

"I know you do, but you've been given a second chance with her and don't throw it away. Hold onto the memories of yesterday, but don't let go of what you have today."

"Joe told me the same thing, how did you..."

"Tell her you love her and hold onto her tightly. I had to leave you, she doesn't and don't make her." She said as she flashed him the smile that he had fallen in love with over 2 years before and faded into the glow of the fire.

A few minutes later, Adam was brought out of his thoughts by the buzz and then Lisa walking in.

"I'm just getting my things and then I'm leaving." She said as she headed towards the bedroom.

"Lees don't. Please stay."

"I can't Adam. I love you, but your heart belongs to someone else."

Adam crossed the apartment and wrapped his arms around her tightly. "We can work this out. Please stay."

"Not until you tell me the truth about where you were all day. Was it really Watcher's business or Alexa business?"

Adam let go of her and led her to the couch. He then crossed the room again to the table where his journals lay and took the top one form the pile and handing it to Lisa. "Read."

"Today I finally started letting go completly of Alexa. It's going to be hard for me to do, but there is someone else in my life who I'm sure will help me through it. Though Alexa will always hold a special place in my heart, a place that was once empty has been filled as I have been given a second chance with Elista. It's a chance I will not take for granted." When she was finished she looked up and Adam.

"A wise person once told me not to let go of what I have today. Will you give me another try? Can we try to make this work?"

"I don't know." She said as she got up and walked to the mantle. "I've lost you twice to another woman and I don't think I can handle loosing you again."

"You haven't lost me."

Lisa looked at the pictures on the mantle and took down one of Adam, Joe and Alexa that apparently was taken the day the two left fr their trip. "She was beuatiful."

"She was a lot like you in many ways."

"Do you think if she were still alive.."

"If she were still alive, I might have never found you."

"Just because I spent the past 800 and some odd years on Holy Ground making stupid jewelry when I didn't want to be there. Tell me, is that the only reason were together now, because I remind you of your precious Alexa?"

Adam stood and went to her. She was upset and he tried to hold her but she backed away. "No, I'm here with you know because I wasn't with you when I should've been." He said regretting it as soon as he said it.

"So you're with me out of pity? Great."

"I didn't mean for it to sound that way. Please can't we try to make this work? We've been given that second chance that most couples don't get."

"I don't think we can make it work. We rushed into things to soon. We need to spend some time together and see what we really want."

"We've spent 1900 years apart and I know what I want, I want you."

"You're not seeing my point. I don't know what I want. Just give me some time." She said as she went to the bedroom and slammed the door.

Adam walked to the door and tried to open it but she had locked it. "Lees?" there was no answer. "Elista please opne the door." Still no answer. "Please don't go."

"Give me one reason I should stay."

"Because I love you." He said. Moments later there was a click on the other side of the door and he opened it. She was sitting on the bed next to her suitcase with her face buried in her hands.

"Does this mean?" he said kneeling in front of her taking her hands in his and looking up at her.

"I just need some time, Adam. Time to see what I really want. You're still on the rebound and I'm just glad to be with someone again."

"Maybe we did rush things, but do you have to go? Where are you going to go?"

"I've been offered a job in New York. I wasn't going to take it but I think it would be a good change for me."

"How long will you be gone?"

"Long enough for us to decide what's right."

"I don't want to loose you again. I can't loose you again."

"You keep saying that, why?"

"Because if you leave, I will loose you."

"Adam, the last time, we were both dead. Technology has changed since then. We can keep in touch, I promise I will."

Adam sighed and stood up. "I guess I have no other choice."

"No. I've got a room at a motel tonight. I'll be leaving first thing in the mroning."

"Are you sure your not leaving because of Alexa?"

"That's only part of it. Trust me, this needs to be done. In a few months, if *we* both feel the same way, we'll try it again." She said as she stood up and took her suitcase to the door.

"Anything I can do to make you change your mind?"

"Just don't die on me again." She said as she tried to smile.

"I won't." He said as he hugged her. "Need some help?"

She nodded. "Thank you."

"I'll miss you."

"I'll miss you too." She said as she kissed him goodbye and headed for the door with Adam carrying her luggage behind...
