Potest Esse Nur Unus: Part 2

Cat slept all through the night, the next day, and part of the next night. Anne or Duncan checked in on her, but the last time Anne checked on her, she noticed she was pale and sweating, even though she shivering. "Duncan, come here for a second." Anne said as she felt her head. "She's burning up with a fever."

"It's probably pneumonia. She'd been walking around for a couple of days in the rain trying to find me. Do you think she'll be all right?" Duncan asked concerned.

"It's hard to tell. We need to get her to a hospital. The sooner we can get her medical treatment the better off she'll be." Anne replied.

"You're a doctor, can't you do anything? You handle things like this all the time."

"But I don't have my equipment. I'm not sure. I'd feel better if she was in the hospital."

"Is there anything you can do here? Give her some medicine or chicken soup?"

"Here," she said taking a piece of her prescription pad out of the drawer in the night stand. "I'll give you a prescription, to get filled. If that doesn't do the trick in a couple of days we'll have to take her to the hospital. Is that clear?"

"Gee, and I thought Marie Antoinette was tough. OK, Doctor Lindsey." he said trying to add some humor to the situation. He left to do as he was told, and came back an hour later with the medicine and a few other supplies, including chicken soup.

The next couple of days were rough for the three. Cat had her ups and downs, and Anne began to feel better about the situation. Then about four days later, Cat took a turn for the worse. "Duncan," Anne said concerned "We have to take her to the hospital now. If not, she's going to die. You promised."

"All right." Duncan said reluctantly. They had no parental consent, and Duncan wasn't sure how he would handle things. "I'll get the car." He left to get the car, leaving Anne to take care of Cat, but it was too late.

When Duncan returned, he walked in to see Anne sitting on the couch. "We waited too long. She's gone." Anne replied sadly.

"I was only gone a couple of minutes." Duncan sat next to Anne consoling her. He knew it was always hard for her to loose a patient, especially one so young. "It wasn't your fault. I should have listened to you sooner than I did." All of a sudden, Duncan got the buzz. "Someone's here." he replied. The two sat silently for a minute, and Duncan got up and looked out the window. There was no one there, and then both of them knew.
