Cross of Swords: Part 11:
Next Day

Chris couldn't sleep all night no matter how hard she tried, but Cat had slept like a baby. The sun was starting to rise over the pyramid when Chris got the buzz. Cat sat straight up in her sleeping bag and looked at Chris, "Kenny?"

"I do not think so." They waited and the Immortal never showed.

"Look at the sky and the way the sun peeks through the temple door. It's beautiful."

"Red skies at night, Immortals delight, red skies at morning, Immortals take warning."

"I thought that was for sailors?"

"It holds true for Immortals as well. A lot of sayings throughout history hold true for us."

"What do you think history would be like without Immortals? Would it be the same?"

"Immortals are the history of the world." Chris said. "Look at Methos. He has been around for over 5000 years. He's lived through the birth and death of Christ, seen hundreds of wars, and more. He has seen History being made. And has lived long enough to tell about it. For the most part, I think history was recorded by Watchers who saw it via their assignments."

"I never thought about it like that. It's hard to imagine what I will have seen and done say 100 years from now."

"I use to think the same thing, but soon you begin to learn that day after day you will love, loose your love, cry, hurt, and heal. We are just like mortals. The only difference is they die, and eventually we will to."

"Does death scare you?"

"I have seen so much of death in my lifetime, that no, it does not scare me. If I am to loose to Kenny today, I will die knowing I have accomplished a lot even though Will's death was not avenged. I died trying."

"I'm the opposite. I've seen so much death that I'm terrified of it. I don't think I'll ever get use to it."

"In time you will. We all learn to deal with it. Speaking of time, the restaurant should be open now. How do you feel about having an authentic Mayan breakfast?"

After breakfast, Chris showed Cat the rest of Chichen Itza and told her about the history of each ruins and their legends. She knew so much, a tour guide offered her a job. When the park closed later that night, the two returned to the campsite with no sign of Kenny.

"Maybe he won't show." Cat said as she started a campfire.

"No, he will be here." Chris responded. And as if they needed proof, both girls got the buzz. Chris instinctively drew her sword. "Told you."

Cat looked around for a few moments. "I don't see him."

"He is here, I can smell the little rat."

"Looking for me?" Kenny said appearing out of nowhere. "How did you know I'd be here? Am I that predictable?"

"I want my sword!" Cat yelled rushing towards him. She stopped dead in her tracks when he pulled it out of his trenchcoat and aimed it towards her throat.

"One more step and I'll have to bury it with your body. Christine can bury you next to Will's headless body."

"Leave her out of this you son-of-a-bitch. This is between you and me." Chris yelled at Kenny. "Cat get out of the way, you can not interfere!"

"But..." Cat started.

"NOW!" Chris yelled. It was the first time Cat and Kenny had heard her yell at someone. She had always been so quiet and level tempered, so Cat backed away.

"You better listen to her," Kenny said. "When I'm done with her, then it's your turn to die."

Cat wanted to kill Kenny right then, but it was Chris's fight and she knew she couldn't interfere. It was a rule.

"If you are so sure that you will win, then let us see just how sure you are of yourself." Chris raised her sword and Kenny accepted the challenge. The fight didn't last long. Chris was a lot stronger the Kenny, and her anger and determination just added to her strength. "This is for Will!" she said as with one final blow, Kenny's head fell to the ground.

Chris stepped back and breathed a sigh of relief. As the power escaped Kenny and struck Chris, thunder rolled. It was such a clear night, with the only lightning from the Quickening, and the roll of thunder, that Cat couldn't help but to notice the temple.

"Chris, the legend!" she yelled, but Chris was to overcome with the power of the Quickening to hear her or move.

During the flashes of light, images of demons floated out of the temple and into the sky. When the Quickening was finally over, Chris fell to the ground and Cat ran to her. All of a sudden, Cat felt another presence. It wasn't one of an Immortal, but still as eerie.

Chris laid there unconscious, but lips moving. Finally Cat heard Chris say, "Yes Will, it is over. He is gone... I love you too." And then Chris became silent and the eerie presence had disappeared.

It was over. Chris had avenged Will's death, the temple had once again become Holy Ground, and Cat had her sward back. It was over.
